Hi

I came across your site looking for something else. I agree wired ethernet is safer than Wifi. You may have mentioned this somewhere, but I'd add switch off the WiFi and Bluetooth on all devices if you don't use it. I only buy laptops with a hardware switch for controlling wireless. I have a place in Monaco, and cellsites are not allowed in the country. There are some pico sites in large buildings (eg shopping malls and similar) but all the external service comes from France and Italy. Monaco Telecom seems to operate as a virtual network on France Telecom's Orange system - no roaming charges when visiting France as a result. Unlike Andorra which has its on system STA. Switch off everything is good for battery saving on smart phones - turning it back on selectively when needed. MC's cable TV boxes require an IP connection to the net also for firmware updates and VoD - but they give the option of Ethernet. Landlines cost less (especially VoIP) and are healthier - I only use mobile in an emergency. ciao

Rowtex appear to have stopped distributing Orchid phones now! Any background as to why??
I got one for my neighbour, and would replace it with a Siemens EcoDECT+ phone is I was sure that they really DO only transmit during calls (plus a few secs) and there's no risk of them staying on transmit between calls, say, by leaving off the cradle. Do you know, or can you confirm please?? Many thanks

----------------
Hi, the Siemens C385 Gigaset phone basestation in ECO+ mode stops transmitting within 35 seconds of you ending a call - regardless of whether you replace the handset in the dock or not. I only tried it with a single handset package though - multi handset packs may behave the same, they may not. Thing is though, if your neighbour spends hours talking on that Siemens or Orchid Dect phone they're still getting massive exposure directly to their head. If they really care they should buy a cheap corded phone instead - we seem to manage just fine.

Hi, the Siemens C385 model I tested, in eco+ mode, turns off the transmitter 30 seconds after the end of a call whether it's docked or not. Might be different with multiple handsets, didn't try that.

Hi thanks for this. Do you know if the new Siemens phones, SL400A for example, also stop emitting when not in use if not docked? On Siemen's website it refers to it only as when in "standby", but Siemens websites for other nations Belgium and South Africa for example, specifically state it needs to be 'docked' (only know this as I was searching it).
Appreciate your intel on the matter.
Regards,
Atif

Hi John, if you're really electrosensitive get rid of any WiFi or Dect cordless phones from your home - you can make do with wired alternatives instead. With your router you can normally just turn off the radio section in setup. I don't think your neighbour's wireless burglar alarm is causing you problems - their sensors don't transmit constantly, and when they do it's at low power, at a non-microwave frequency, for a couple of seconds - any wireless game controller will give you a much bigger exposure. You need to buy one of the £50 audio electrosmog detectors if you're really interested - you can always sell it on later.

i am electrosensitive and find the wii remote causes no problem, the same with the ps3 controller. the xbox 360 joypad is way more trouble; my throat aches and i can feel Nauseous. i tried using just a wired joypad but that made things worse as the console sends out huge radiation trying to find a wireless joypad. along with my neighbours wireless burglar alarm, wifi and the xbox 360 joypad i suffer discomfort; but apparently its all in my head.

It's not just the data NS has got wrong, it's also the theory. The article suggests that the very act of getting information inevitably uses energy, which might mean that we're stuffed however well Google trims its sails. This fails for 2 reasons. The crude reason is that the energy required to get one bit of information in time t is limited below by (Planck's constant)/t, so that we can use less energy by slowing down a bit.
But the more subtle and important reason is that the measure of information (and hence the lower limit of energy) depends on the context, which determines both what counts as information (the information in a hand of playing cards depends on whether you are playing bridge or collecting antique cards) and on the prior probabilities at that moment for different events. The skill of Google and other search firms lies in keeping ahead of the game with its indexing context, so that what is big information for the user is small information (so small energy) for the provider.

Well done. Further, as even at the completely nonsense numbers the original article used, there was no addressing how such research was accomplished in the past. How much energy was or would be expended in phone calls, trips to the library, or trees killed to put all of this information on paper. It is fine to point out that we could be more efficient. But folks need to get their facts straight and put it into proper context.

It is like complaining about VOIP security when you are still using unencrypted POTS. Just makes you look stupid.
